“Florida football was the joke at Doak” – Pat Dooley in the Gainesville Sun
While I did write “the full range of outcomes seem possible to me”, I didn’t expect what happened yesterday. In every other game against Florida State in the Urban Meyer era, the Gators came out sharp and focused; any thought of them looking ahead to the SEC championship and playing lackadaisical against FSU proved to be wishful thinking on the part of Seminole fans.
Yesterday, however, UF looked like they were in a season opener or their first road game. In the first half, their offense was so confused that they’d burned all of their timeouts with 9:50 remaining. Each time it was to avoid a delay of game penalty. The Gators fumbled the ball three times and had one interception. Also, for the first time in the Urban Meyer era, the failed to convert 4th down on a fake punt. On the subsequent play, Christian Ponder lobbed the ball 40 yards for a touchdown. An ugly day for the Gators. Some notes:
– Florida State’s punter, Shawn Powell was great. He placed three punts inside the Gators’ ten yard line and his other was a 44 yarder from out of the end zone.
– It was one point short of being Florida’s worst loss in the Urban Meyer era (mark currently held by the 31-6 loss to Alabama). It was Florida’s worst out of conference loss since losing to Miami by 25 in 2002 and their worst loss to Florida State since 1988.
– With Maryland beating NC State yesterday, FSU is going to the ACC Championship game. Seminole fans are certainly happier to have it happen this way then for it to come in conjuction with a loss to the Gators; it would have felt like forced extended misery.
